Portraits: Memories of 9/11

Al Fortier poses for a portrait on Friday, August 10, 2007. Fortier was a volunteer on September 11, 2001 as an NYPD detective in charge of evidence collection. After his work was done he developed a severe heart and lung condition, and now suffers from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Because of his health, Al isn't able to work anymore, which leaves him without the money he needs to pay for his medicine and continued healthcare. "I loved being a cop," explained Al, "and now I can't. That's what I miss the most, not being able to do what used to."
